Are Garden Rooms Warm in Winter?

We One of the questions we get asked a lot at Cosy Garden Rooms is: "Are garden rooms warm in winter?"

The answer is yes!

Garden rooms are highly insulated using modern building materials and techniques that ensure they are not cold, drafty, or difficult to heat. In fact, a well-designed garden room can be just as cosy as any room inside your home, if not more so.

Here’s why garden rooms are perfect for use throughout the year:

1. Insulation

At Cosy Garden Rooms, we prioritise high-quality insulation to keep the space warm in winter and cool in summer. The walls, floor and roof are insulated. The floor has a waterproof membrane, and the roof is filled with rockwool insulation to keep the rising warmth inside the building and the cold air out. This makes the room suitable for year-round use, whether as a home office, relaxation space, or studio.

2. Heating Options

Many of our garden rooms are equipped with efficient heating solutions, such as wall-mounted radiators or underfloor heating, ensuring that maintaining a comfortable temperature during winter is easy and cost-effective. Put them on a timer or just pop them on when you go in, the rooms warm up very quickly.

4. Versatility

Our garden rooms can be adapted to serve multiple purposes all year round. Whether you need a workspace, gym, art studio, or a personal retreat, your garden room will suit your needs in every season.

5. Natural Light

With large windows and doors, our garden rooms are designed to let in abundant natural light, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere, no matter the time of year.

How Do Garden Rooms Stay Warm in Winter?

At Cosy Garden Rooms, we design with year-round comfort in mind. Here’s how we make sure our garden rooms stay warm, even in the coldest months:

1. Premium Insulation

Our advanced insulation methods ensure that warmth stays inside the room. The walls, roof, and floors are fully insulated to provide a barrier against the cold.

  • Floor Insulation: Thick foam insulation paired with thick floor boarding on top of a solid concrete foundation and a double waterproof membrane prevent cold air and dampness from entering.

  • Roof Insulation: 100mm of Rockwool insulation, internal MDF ceiling, OSB external boarding and an EDPM rubber roof complete the roof construction. In addition, a green/sedum roof can be fitted; environmentally friendly and it provides an additional layer of natural insulation. Solar panels can also be fitted.

  • Wall Insulation: A blend of natural and man-made materials offers breathability, fireproofing, and excellent thermal efficiency.

  • Double-Glazing: All windows and doors feature double-glazing, maximizing thermal retention.

2. Effective Heating Systems

Each Cosy Garden Room includes a built-in heating solution, such as a wall-mounted radiator, which quickly heats the room. Thanks to our insulation, it takes minimal energy to keep your garden room warm. A fan heater or oil filled radiator will do the job just fine. Oil filled radiator are more energy efficient in the long run as the continue to emit heat after being turned off. It is also possible to install Far Infrared heaters these are wall or ceiling mounted, the initial outlay is higher however they are very energy efficient.

3. Optional Temperature Control Upgrades

For added comfort, we offer several upgrade options:

  • Underfloor Heating: A great way to enhance warmth in the colder months.

  • Air Conditioning: For ultimate year-round temperature control, combining heating in winter and cooling in summer.

Final Thoughts

With proper design, insulation, and heating systems, garden rooms are ideal for use throughout the year. Whether it’s serving as a workspace or a personal retreat, a well-insulated garden room provides warmth, comfort, and energy efficiency—even in winter. At Cosy Garden Rooms, we pride ourselves on creating spaces that feel like an extension of your home.
